The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is under fire over the toxic mine waste spill it caused in Colorado. The spill of 3 million gallons of sludge filled with heavy metals into a river led to immediate scorn from Republicans and the EPA'’s opponents. Critics accused the Obama administration of hypocrisy and said officials are not holding themselves to the same standards as private companies that pollute. On July 15, 2015 the Department of Labor issued Administrator’s Interpretation No. 2015-1. With this Memorandum, the Department hopes to provide clarity to businesses on the proper classification of employees and independent contractors in the work force. The Department’s Memorandum opines that failure to properly classify workers is problematic because it deprives workers from protections such as minimum wage, overtime compensation, unemployment insurance and workers compensation.  The Department also notes that improper classification “results in lower tax revenues for government…” Read More...

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) workplace Communication Standards are now in place. These standards require employers to utilize “Safety Data Sheets” for chemicals used and/or present in the workplace. In addition, the Communications Standards require employers to provide training to ensure that employees understand the content and meaning of the Safety Data Sheets. The standardized format is designed to arm employees with an understanding of the safety risks and necessary safety precautions associated with work place chemicals. Safety Data Sheets contain sixteen different categories “disclosures”. A full description of the categories can be obtained here.
