California finalizes major rule to mandate energy storage, boosting renewables

The California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) this week finalized a decision that will require power companies to expand their capacity to store energy, which advocates say will improve the storage and delivery of renewable energy resources.

Under the decision, the state's investor-owned utilities must begin buying a combined 200 megawatts of energy storage technology by 2014, reaching 1.3 gigawatts (1,325 megawatts) by the end of 2020, enough to power nearly 1 million 994,000 homes.
