On Tuesday, the Canadian government released its “Notice of Intent to Impose Countermeasures in Response to United States Tariffs on Canadian Goods”. It is a wide-ranging document that hits across all sectors.
Unfortunately, the equipment industry (ag, construction, and OPE) has been swept up in the trade war. Nearly every category of equipment/product was listed in the document.
As previously outlined by the federal government, the release of the document kicks off a consultation period where industry groups and companies can supply feedback on the updated list of goods – and present arguments for why they should be removed. The consultation period ends on March 25. NAEDA will be submitting a reply to strongly advocate on members’ behalf.
Like last month, the situation remains fluid. Even though the U.S. stated all Canadian goods are now subject to tariffs, yesterday afternoon they allowed the Big 3 vehicle manufacturers another 30-day reprieve. Headlines today claim the U.S. is considering more carveouts for certain industries.
We will keep a close watch on developments while continuing to prepare for a long period of uncertainty.
Attached for review is the list of equipment that is currently on the Government of Canada’s retaliatory tariff list that will impact NAEDA members. Please review and advise if you cannot find a product that you hold in your inventory. The government list is a large document so it is possible we missed some items. (Please note: yellow highlights indicate items that were part of the initial package of retaliatory tariffs and are currently subject to 25% tariffs.)
If you have any questions about the contents of the list or the implementation of tariffs, please do not hesitate to contact us.
