The past few weeks have been stressful and volatile with the significant threat of U.S. tariffs hanging over our industry and country. With such unpredictability, identifying the most influential and efficient means to respond has been a challenge for all industry associations.
Last week, NAEDA participated in the Canadian Agricultural Consortium meeting – a group led by the AMC that is working towards a unified objective and coordinated approach for our industry as we prepare for the possible implementation of punitive tariffs. Other participants included: Canadian Cattle Association, Canadian Pulse Growers, Canadian Canola Growers, Ag Producers of Saskatchewan, Western Canadian Wheat Growers, and CFIB.
Within that larger group, many of the associations are participating in other “consortium” groups – both industry-specific and broader. The takeaway from this meeting was that broad communication is good; but that a cohesive and focused response needs to be developed so our Agriculture industry message stands out among all others.
It was also agreed that this is not a short-term issue. While we must prepare to respond when/if US tariffs are imposed, this has created momentum to initiate much broader changes that will strengthen Canada’s competitiveness domestically and internationally.
Regrettably, since the Consortium meeting on Friday, the steel and aluminum tariffs have now been added to the agenda. While this has spurred even greater action from politicians and business leaders alike, it has also increased the complexity of how to respond.
NAEDA representatives will continue to advocate on behalf of our dealers and support the activities of the Ag Consortium. In the meantime, we have sent a position letter to Prime Minister Trudeau and his senior Ministers. CLICK BELOW to review.
