The news on tariffs has not improved significantly since our last alert, and this afternoon, more conflicting messages are emerging.
After his first Cabinet meeting, President Trump stated that tariffs would go into effect on April 2. Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, attempted to clarify, but it remains unclear whether March 4 is still in play as implementation day. Both referenced work by Canada and Mexico to satisfy the President on efforts to secure their respective borders as being key to setting the tariff timeline. So, similar to the last time, we may see last minute negotiations that either postpone or reduce the tariffs. While Canadian officials and business leaders have been exhausting every possible angle and relationship in an effort to reverse the course on tariffs, it is difficult to predict how the U.S. administration will act. Regardless of what happens over the next few days, the uncertainty has already deeply impacted the Canadian market.

It is unlikely that the threat is a short-term issue and we will be talking about the Canada-U.S. trading relationship for quite some time.
