New York Right to Repair Bill Passes Senate Committee

Yesterday, the Senate Consumer Protection Committee passed SB5771 out of committee unanimously. The committee took no public comments on the bill, and the bill sponsor did not respond to our request for a meeting prior to the hearing.

The bill has a subsequent referral to the Senate Agriculture Committee. NAEDA has sent our position statement to members of the Agriculture Committee and requested a meeting with the committee chair. The bill is not currently scheduled for another hearing. We will keep you updated on when and if that occurs.

Another Right to Repair bill was introduced in the House this week as well. Assembly Bill 6601 is sponsored by Representative Anna Kelles (D-Ithaca). The bill is specific to farm equipment and contains language that would mandate parts and tools be sold to owners and independent repair shops at net cost. The bill has been referred to the House Consumer Affairs and Protection Committee. NAEDA has sent our position statement to the committee and requested a meeting with the Chair.

We will continue fighting both these bills and the attempt to remove our exemption from existing Right to Repair statutes in New York. If you have questions, please contact Dave Close or Eric Wareham directly.
