Ohio Right to Repair Bill Sponsor Accepting Industry Exemption

Ohio House Bill 301 was introduced in May by Representative Adam Mathews (R-Lebanon). As introduced, the Right to Repair bill was somewhat broad-based with exemptions for several industries and product categories including construction equipment but not for other off-road equipment such as agriculture.

NAEDA submitted our position statement to Rep. Mathews when the bill was introduced requesting the addition of our industry exemption language. That led to discussions revealing his intent to focus on consumer electronics such as phones and tablets. We have been assured by Rep. Mathews there will be a forthcoming bill substitute with our industry exemption language included that encompasses all of our member’s products.

HB 301 has been scheduled for a 2nd hearing on October 21st in the House Technology and Innovation Committee. With the industry exemption language, NAEDA will be neutral on the bill. We will follow this closely to make sure the exemption language is adopted.
